Woodworking: Building a Cat Lamp

enrichment
provider avatar

7 - 12 years old

Description

The goal of this camp is for children to learn how to construct and finish projects made of wood. Children will start the session by learning the properties of wood before attempting basic joinery and wood shaping. The first project would be a simple toy before they attempt the next project - A cat shaped lamp.

While the children work on their projects, emphasis is placed on planning practices to reduce material waste. Children also learn to troubleshoot when mistakes are made. Projects require the use hand tools such as the saw and drill to complete.

Great attention will be given to the proper use of tools and workshop safety. The experience is empowering to children as they are encouraged to think independently and complete most of the projects by themselves.

Course Objectives

During the camp, children will be exposed to some valuable life skills such as:

1. Develop working plans for woodworking projects

2. Demonstrate proper care and safe use of lab and woodworking equipment.

3. Identify common woodworking hand and machine tools by their proper name.

4. Identify, layout, and construct a basic wood joint.

5. Demonstrate the ability to use and follow directions and procedures.

6. Demonstrate problem solving abilities

7. Work productively with others in a team effort.

8. Demonstrate their ability to think independently using appropriate resources.

In this course, children sketch before developing a 3D representation of their ideas. This is akin to the world of design and engineering where visualization in 2D precedes manufacturing. Children are given the space and the resources to tap into their intrinsic abilities and creativity, with a focus on the process rather than the outcome. Children get to take home two hand made items after the camp.
