Building a Good Learning Environment for Your Kids

Make learning and play spaces at home the best for growing up years

Importance of Space for Your Kids

Given a rich environment, children’s learning becomes like the air – it is in and around them! Be it in homes, schools, or in the outdoors, a well-designed or appropriate environment plays a critical role in your children’s development through learning and play. It helps to nurture their inquisitiveness and sense of curiosity as it dictates how they act, behave, and feel.

We will guide you through the concepts of well-defined learning environments that will allow growth and development for your children.

Carving Out Learning Spaces At Home

Ever felt inspired by mummy influencers who always show off their nicely designed kids corner? You can easily do so at home too! Consider the age, interests, and abilities of each of your children and adapt accordingly for early childhood activities such as art, reading or writing, science, and so on. Elements such as vibrance, colours, safety, and multi-functionality should give a warm and welcoming vibe to your children which also motivates them for learning and social interaction.

You don’t necessarily need a big amount of space to make a kids zone at home. Facilitating and encouraging a flow from playing to learning will be important in building learning outcomes. Keep play areas separate from learning areas as the former tends to be noisier and distracting to the latter. Keeping the environment well-organised, cosy, and personable whilst offering materials and other elements for cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development help greatly to spur your children towards creativity and exploration. Encouraging natural light in the learning area enhances the task performance of children and adds to the feel-good vibe of the area.

Play Outside!

Children learn enormously from the outdoors and play areas. It allows them to move and think freely without restrictions. It builds their cognitive abilities as they use all their senses to appreciate the variety of colours, different sounds, and noises, the sense of space, and the nature around them. Play areas are typically spacious and on a bigger scale, which helps develop problem-solving and creativity whilst using their social and emotional skills as they interact with others. Motor skills are enhanced as physical activity is encouraged when they explore, touch, climb or run about.

Using the Right Tools for Learning and Play

Learning and play materials are pivotal to developing your children’s cognitive abilities, emotional and social well-being, physical skills, and language prowess. These materials should be age-appropriate. You may be surprised that your local mama shops offer interesting materials that will offer endless amounts of fun to your children. Keep an eye out the next time you pop by to get your groceries!

Availability of materials can help to build an intellectual environment where children can be challenged to test ideas and demonstrate learnings and practices. Invest in open-ended toys such as building blocks and magnetic tiles which helps foster creativity, inquisitiveness about the world, problem-solving. Being well-organised is important, so remember to keep these materials well-maintained to attract kids’ attention and for proper learning.
