Course Overview

Take your child's digital design skills beyond the basics with this advanced 3D modelling workshop! Designed for students who already have some experience in 3D modelling, this programme introduces SketchUp - a professional design tool used by architects and designers - to help young creators bring their ideas to life in three dimensions. Through guided, hands-on tasks, students will explore advanced concepts of space, scale, proportion, form and function while developing critical design thinking skills.

Course Content

Participants will dive into the world of SketchUp, learning how to transition ideas from 2D sketches into polished 3D models. Using SketchUp's intuitive interface, students will practise modelling techniques, explore how geometry and space interact, and refine their creativity through hands-on modelling tasks. The lessons naturally integrate elements from art, science, maths and technology, allowing students to understand not just how to design, but why certain design decisions matter - building deeper insight into real-world creation and problem solving.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:

  • Understand 3D space, scale, proportions and how they influence design.
  • Use core SketchUp tools to create and refine digital models.
  • Translate 2D ideas and sketches into fully realised 3D models.
  • Apply basic design thinking principles such as form, function and structure.
  • Build confidence and independence in digital creation through experimentation and iteration.

Teaching Method

  • Guided, hands-on learning: Students actively engage in modelling with support from experienced instructors.
  • Design integration: Lessons combine digital tools with real-world design thinking - considering why models work as they do.
  • Creative exploration: Students are encouraged to plan, experiment and improve their models through iteration, nurturing problem-solving and confidence.
  • Supportive environment: Energetic instruction helps learners move beyond passive screen time into practical creation and refinement.
