Course Overview:

Aikido is based on fundamental principles of harmony and mutual respect, fostering friendship and camaraderie through Shinju-kai's teaching methodology. It is well-suited for children as it equips them with the knowledge and skills to defend themselves against opponents of superior size and strength using smooth, fluid, and circular movements without excessive physical exertion.

The art emphasizes blending with an opponent's force rather than confronting it directly. Aikido helps develop children's psychomotor skills and instils values such as self-confidence, discipline, respect, and care for others. Through Aikido, children learn to manage stress, violence, and school or work-related issues in a calm, peaceful, and harmonious manner. Therefore, the benefits of Aikido extend beyond physical fitness, contributing to the holistic development of individuals.

Course Content:

Warm-up and Stretching:

Begin the class with a warm-up session to prepare the children's bodies for physical activity. This can include stretching exercises and joint mobilization movements.

Aikido Techniques and Principles:

Introduce the children to fundamental Aikido techniques and principles. Teach them basic movements, such as rolling, falling safely, and body positioning. Emphasize the importance of blending with an attacker's energy and redirecting it rather than using force.

Partner Training:

Pair up the children and provide opportunities for partner training. This allows them to practice Aikido techniques in a controlled and safe environment. Encourage them to take turns being the attacker and the defender, fostering cooperation, respect, and trust between partners.

Ukemi (Falling) Practice: Dedicate time to teaching children proper falling techniques (ukemi) to ensure their safety during Aikido practice. Teach them how to roll and fall gracefully, minimizing the impact on their bodies.

Learning Outcomes:

Aikido can help to develop children’s psychomotor skills, but more importantly, through the practice of Aikido, children will also benefit from the inculcation of the following:

  • Children will learn to respect and take care of one another.
  • Loving your opponent and winning without violence and fighting.
  • They will learn essential self-defence techniques to protect themselves from injuries by accidental falls/slips or attacks from others.
  • Increase mental resilience, discipline, and focus, which will assist them in coping with stress and in their academic studies.
  • Develop students' overall physical fitness, core muscular strength, flexibility, stamina, focus, reflexes, and fundamental motor skills (FMS).
  • Focusing and listening, building on individual children’s attention span.
  • Igniting their self-confidence and self-esteem could allow them to be effective leaders in the future.
  • Prepares them for a successful transition to the Adult class.

Teaching Methods:

Demonstration:

Begin by demonstrating Aikido techniques and movements yourself using clear and expressive movements. Visual demonstrations help children understand the techniques' proper form, body positioning, and flow.

Breakdown and Step-by-Step Instruction:

Break down complex techniques into smaller, manageable steps. Teach each step separately, allowing children to practice and master one step before moving on to the next.

Partner Work:

Assign partners to practise techniques, alternating roles as the attacker and defender. Partner work helps children understand the dynamics of Aikido techniques and learn to blend with their partner's movements.

Class Timing:

  • Tuesday 3.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Tuesday 4.30pm to 5.30pm
