Introduction to the Architecture Course & Career Paths

Overview

This is a workshop for students considering a career in Architecture. This immersive 5-day program serves as an introduction to the role of an Architect, the journey of the architectural education leading to being a registered Architect.

Students will learn about the differentiated opportunities from Diploma, Undergraduate and Masters in Architecture to better understand the uniqueness of architecture pedagogy, the possible career paths and the multitude of options available so they can be better informed in making the major decision to embark on the extensive architecture learning journey.

Course Content

The programme will provide an introduction to the architecture profession and educational journey, design a home, learn Sketchup 3D modelling, and create a presentation board layout in Canva.

The students will experience the design process of designing a house, a project from scratch, where the steps of the Design Thinking methodology are introduced to understand and define the needs and challenges of those they are designing for. They will begin their preliminary design with sketches before building up their ideas in 3D, both as a physical model and digitally through SketchUp, a 3D modelling computer-aided design software commonly used by Architects. 

Students will be introduced to tools and tips for graphically laying out their presentation board in preparation for their Design Crit, a simulated presentation format commonly used by architecture students. The programme will conclude with presentations by speakers who are practising architects, architecture educators, graduate architects, and/or architecture students, offering an overview of their exciting and creative journeys to date.

The project completed at the workshop can be included in the student’s portfolio preparation.

Important Notes

• All materials will be provided.
• Program outline subject to change.
• Minimum 4 pax to start the session.
• Students must bring their laptops for this programme so that they can work on their Design Project in SketchUp both in class and at home.

• Nut-free and halal snacks are included. Students are welcome to bring their favourite snacks as well.
