LaunchPad: Pre-Reading Skills Development

Overview: 

LaunchPad is expertly designed to enhance your child's pre-reading skills and phonemic awareness. These foundational abilities are crucial in ensuring they grow into becoming confident and independent readers, setting them up for a lifetime of learning and exploration through literature.

Course Content: 

LaunchPad places a strong emphasis on mastering the nuances of phonemic awareness, phonics, and grapheme blending.

1. Phonemic Awareness: This is the ability to pinpoint, access, and distinguish the sounds in words. In LaunchPad, the attention is especially directed towards the first, middle, and last sounds in words.
2. Phonics: This involves recognising a symbol, such as a letter, and associating it with its corresponding sound.
3. Grapheme Blending: A blend of phonemic awareness and phonics, this skill is about swiftly recognising letters, accessing their related sounds automatically, and merging these sounds in any given sequence or order. This blending is pivotal when students encounter unfamiliar words and need to decode them.

Learning Outcomes: 

Building on Phonemic Awareness:

Starting from the foundational phonemic awareness, LaunchPad ensures that once your child is familiar with the sounds of English, they're guided to identify the letters that correspond to those sounds.

Emphasis on Phonics:

Knowing the sounds isn’t enough. LaunchPad emphasises the automatic recall of phonics, which is pivotal for reading words. This foundation empowers your child with word attack skills, equipping them to tackle varied texts with confidence.

Grapheme Blending Mastery:

Positioned just before full reading, grapheme blending fosters a deep understanding of how sounds correlate to the written language. LaunchPad ensures that your child gains the confidence to apply these skills to real-world texts, like captivating.

Recognising Sight Words:

Sight words are critical to reading. Your child will be taught to identify words that appear frequently but do not have a clear letter-sound relationship (sight words) to build fluency, and therefore reading comprehension.

• Vocabulary development is an integral part of LaunchPad and is achieved through both incidental learning and explicit instruction.
• LaunchPad WorkBooks are designed as a supplementary tool to encourage independent learning while reinforcing concepts taught in the lesson.
• Each student's progress is systematically monitored and recorded on a weekly basis to ensure they are on track to achieve their individual learning goals.
