Description

Course Overview:

Little Mandarin Speaker enhances comprehension and appreciation of spoken Chinese through exposure to a variety of speech and drama performances. This course also improves fluency, pronunciation, and articulation in Mandarin through regular practice in speech and drama activities.

We work with reading proficiency by reading engaging scripts, poetry, and other written materials used in performances. Our students express creative writing abilities by composing scripts, dialogues, and reflections on performances.

We inculcate cultural awareness and appreciation by understanding cultural contexts and exploring the rich heritage of Chinese literature, folklore, and historical narratives through dramatic interpretations.

Students are encouraged to express their understanding of Chinese culture and traditions through performances and intercultural competence. This allows students to develop sensitivity and appreciation for cultural diversity within the Chinese-speaking world at the end of the course.

Course Content:

The course incorporates traditional Chinese theatrical forms, including understanding opera and puppetry, providing historical and cultural context. By participating in these activities, students not only improve their language proficiency but also gain a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and performing arts.

Teaching Methods:

We offer interactive and experiential learning approaches that emphasize active participation and engagement. Techniques such as role-playing, improvisation, and storytelling are used to encourage students to express themselves creatively and confidently. Teachers often employ vocal exercises to improve diction, tone, and clarity, alongside body language and movement exercises to enhance physical expression. Incorporating traditional Chinese theatrical elements, like Peking opera techniques, provides cultural context and enriches the learning experience. Additionally, peer feedback and group performances foster collaboration and build a supportive learning environment. These methods collectively aim to develop both linguistic and dramatic skills in students.
