ATS - Isopods: Crawly Critters

Course Overview

Calling all budding biologists! Join us for an exciting exploration of the fascinating world of isopods. In this STEAM hands-on workshop, our explorers will get up close with these tiny but mighty creatures and discover their vital role in our ecosystem.

Featuring live isopods, children will observe their unique characteristics and behaviours. They will learn more about their role as decomposers, and how they contribute to a healthy ecosystem. Through fun and interactive STEAM hands-on activities, our explorers will design their a terrarium for their Isopods and bring it home!

Course Content

In this workshop, our explorers will delve into the world of Isopods. They will complete the following projects during this 2-hour workshop:

• Get Up Close: Explorers will observe behavioural patterns behind these fascinating creatures.
• Design an Isopods Terrarium: Explorers will carefully select appropriate materials to provide the perfect living environment for their new Isopod friends.
• What Makes Isopods Happy: Explorers will learn and understand the preferences of these creatures and learn how to best care for them!

Learning Outcomes

In this workshop, our young explorers will:

• Discover the fascinating world of isopods: Learn about their unique biology, behaviour, and vital role in the ecosystem.
• Become budding scientists: Develop key scientific inquiry skills through observation, experimentation, and data recording.
• Design and create a thriving mini-ecosystem: Apply their knowledge to design and build a suitable habitat for their Isopod friends.

Teaching Method

Experiential Learning: Students will be acquiring knowledge through firsthand experiences and engaging in practical, hands-on activities.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required.

Assessment

No assessments will be done but children will bring back the 3D artwork.

• There will be a 15-minute short break during the workshop for children to take a rest.
