ATS - Science of Music

Course Overview:

Calling all budding musicians and curious explorers! Get ready for a harmonious 2-hours journey where science and music collide! This engaging workshop will introduce children to the fascinating science behind music through exciting and interactive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities.

Discover the physics of sound, explore how different musical instruments create their unique tones, and even delve into how our brains react to melodies! Join us for a fun-filled exploration that blends scientific principles with the magic of music!

Course content:

During this 2 hours workshop, our budding musicians will complete and bring home the following projects in (*):

• *Design a DIY Musical Box: Design a musical box, understanding how clockwork mechanism creates music
• *Customise a Kalimba: Learn about how different lengths and vibrations create various musical notes and customise it with your favourite colours!
• Experiment with a Banana Piano: Tinker with a banana piano and understand how it works. Test other fruits and everyday objects by adding them to the circuit to discover which are conductors or insulators.

Learning outcomes:

During this 2-hour workshop, children will learn the scientific principles behind music and complete projects. Topics covered:

1. The Science of Sound: Understanding what sound is and how it travels as vibrations.
2. Musical Instruments and Sound Production: Exploring how different instruments create unique sounds and music.
3. Conductors and Insulators: Explore how electricity flows through different materials to create a working banana piano.

Teaching methods:

Experiential Learning: Students will be acquiring knowledge through firsthand experiences and engaging in practical, hands-on activities.

Stationery and Water bottle

Important notes:

There will be a 15-minute short break during the workshop for children to take a rest
