Description

New Holiday Camp during PSLE Marking Week (12th to 14th October)

Course Overview

Is your child tired of writing predictable, repetitive compositions? This workshop covers everything students need to transform their writing from simple to captivating. We move away from rote memorization and mechanical "model compositions," teaching young writers how to unlock their own creative ideas and build meaningful stories around them.

Students will learn how to hook readers from the very first line, use descriptive techniques to bring scenes to life, and structure their thoughts logically so their narratives flow naturally from start to finish.

Course Content

Over this 3-day immersive workshop, students will progress through key stages of narrative craft:

  • Day 1: Hooks, Suspense & Brainstorming
  • Break free from "boring weather starters" (e.g., "One sunny day...") and learn high-impact introductions and conclusions.
  • Learn techniques to build genuine suspense and anticipation before reaching the story’s climax.
  • Guided idea discussion and plot mapping.
  • Day 2: Show, Don't Tell — Descriptive Writing
  • Apply advanced descriptive writing techniques to elevate simple sentences into vivid imagery.
  • Practice "slowing down time" to capture small, impactful details that make scenes feel real.
  • Collaborative idea discussion and scene visualization.
  • Day 3: Full Composition Writing & Individual Feedback
  • Put theory into practice by writing a complete composition independently.
  • Receive personalized, live marking and feedback during class to target individual growth areas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, your child will be able to:

  • Craft Engaging Hooks & Endings: Write memorable introductions and satisfying conclusions without relying on predictable tropes.
  • Apply Descriptive Writing Techniques: Turn basic statements into rich, sensory-driven prose.
  • Master Scene Visualisation: Notice fine details and slow down their narrative pace to expand story arcs naturally.
  • Cultivate Original Thinking: Generate unique story concepts rather than depending on memorised templates.
  • Organise Ideas Logically: Build well-structured paragraphs that connect seamlessly throughout the composition.

Teaching Methods

We use an interactive, Idea-First Pedagogy. Learning is built around group discussions, collaborative idea generation, and targeted skill exercises. Rather than passive listening, students actively practice applying new descriptive tools before putting pen to paper in a supportive, constructive environment.

Assessment Methods

  • Continuous In-Class Observation: Instructors evaluate each child's participation, idea generation, and application of skills during group exercises.
  • Diagnostic Feedback: Teachers assess the student's final full composition to identify key strengths and target specific weaknesses for future improvement.

Prerequisites
