Minecraft: Sustainable Cities

Course Overview:
Explorers will learn about different sustainability topics such as Climate Change, Green Living Spaces, Urban Farming and Waste Management. With this knowledge, they will build their own virtual communities with other Explorers in Minecraft! Together in groups of 2-5, Explorers will build their own virtual communities with other Explorers in Minecraft and create a presentation to share their ideas.
Course content:
In this 5-days camp, our Jr. Architects will work in groups to plan and build their sustainable cities. They will complete the following projects during this 5-days camp:
Day 1: Introduction
- Plan the map of your city and build it out!
Day 2: Climate Changes and Impact
- Use nature blocks and add green living spaces! Build two types of automated farms
Day 3: Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy
- Learn about the different types of energy and energy conversion. Add solar panels to your city!
Day 4: Waste Management
- Understand the importance of waste management in a sustainable city. Create an automatic waste management system in their cities!
Day 5: Presentation
- Create presentation slides and present them with your friends!
Learning outcomes:
In this camp, Explorers will engage in different activities to:
A. Introduction
- Understand maps and layout planning
- Understand sustainability and what makes a city sustainable
B. Green Spaces
- What is climate change and its impacts on Earth?
- What are green spaces and how do it help fight climate change
- Understand the government's future sustainability plans and how to develop them further.
- Minecraft: Build an automatic farm to help ease farming process
C. Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy
- What are non-renewable energy and its limitations
- Explore the different methods to generate renewable energy and which lands are suitable for different renewable sources.
- Minecraft: Plan and build a renewable energy source network in their sustainable cities
D. Waste Management Sorting
- What is waste management and why is it important in a sustainable city?
- Discuss and plan different methods to manage waste in a sustainable city.
- Minecraft: Build an incinerator and discuss further methods to improve waste management in sustainable cities.
E. Presentation
- Students will learn how to create their presentation slides and how to present their sustainable cities with them.
F. Collaboration
- Students will learn to collaborate and work together in groups to plan and build their sustainable cities.
Teaching methods:
Experiential Learning: Students will be acquiring knowledge through firsthand experiences and engaging in practical, hands-on activities.
Prerequisites:
Children need to be equipped with basic IT skills to operate a laptop/computer.
Assessment methods:
The following documents will be sent out digitally to students at the end of the camp:
- A Certificate of Completion
- Presentation Slides
- Minecraft Project World
- Video of Presentation

Materials:
- Laptop/ iPad/ Tablets
- Charger
- Mouse for Laptops
Necessary Software:
- Students will be required to have Minecraft: Education Edition Application installed on their device before the start of the camp. They will be given a Minecraft: Education Edition account that will be valid for a year from the start of the camp.
Important notes:
There will be a 15-minute short break during the workshop for children to take a rest
