P2 Mandarin Speech and Literacy

Course Overview: 

Here at Edugrove, we have deliberately designed our programmes with an emphasis on FUN! But what exactly does ‘fun’ mean and why is it important? After all, learning Mandarin is a serious business – isn’t it?

We don’t want children to feel that speaking Mandarin is a chore or an unpleasant language to learn. We want our students to LEARN it, LOVE it and LIVE it with appreciation, enjoyment and success. For that to happen, it’s important to maintain our student’s interests at every step of the way. That’s why all our lessons are consistently fun, interactive, and leave our students excited for more!

Course Content: 

Each week's lesson focuses on a different element of the Singapore school's Chinese language exam, including oral and speaking skills, Chinese composition writing, and comprehension. We utilise specially designed games to introduce commonly tested vocabulary and idioms, engaging students in role-play to help them understand language in context. By incorporating physical elements into words and phrases, children absorb and retain vocabulary more effectively than through traditional teaching methods. Additionally, incorporating drama adds an element of enjoyment to the learning process and creates a lot more fun!

Learning Outcomes: 

Language Proficiency: Develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. Enhance vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure to communicate effectively in both formal and informal contexts.

Reading Comprehension: Improve reading skills by understanding and interpreting various types of texts, such as stories, articles, and poems. Enhance reading fluency and comprehension through practice and exposure to a wide range of Chinese texts.

Oral Communication: Enhance oral communication skills through activities that promote speaking and listening, such as conversations, role-plays, and presentations. Focus on pronunciation, intonation, and clarity in Chinese speech.

Writing Skills: Develop writing skills by composing sentences, paragraphs, and short essays. Focus on sentence structure, coherence, and appropriate use of vocabulary and grammar.

Chinese Pinyin: Learn and utilise Chinese Pinyin, the phonetic system, to improve pronunciation and aid in reading and writing Chinese characters.

Teaching Methods:

EduGrove's curriculum closely aligns with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) syllabus for Chinese Language, covering both primary and secondary levels. This ensures that students become familiar with the MOE designated keywords. Our teaching team consistently collects the latest exam papers from different schools to emphasise commonly tested keywords. As a result, students, as well as parents, can expect improved academic performance in school and feel confident and well-prepared for exams.

Students are expected to have a foundational understanding of previous year concepts.
