P4 Math Problem-Solving

Course Overview: 

Instic’s P4 programmes were formulated by ex-MOE teachers and curriculum specialists who have extensive experience in curriculum planning. Every lesson is centred on developing strong foundation skills to tackle problem sums. Students are mentored to complete their work with a spirit of excellence and pride.

Instic’s proprietary materials contain skill-based modules, a spectrum of fundamental to challenging questions, and specially selected exam questions. Your child will be able to learn, retain and apply the essential mathematical concepts. Instic’s exam preparation classes expose your child to a wide variety of real exam-based questions to eliminate the fear and anxiety of examinations.

Course Content: 

In Primary 4, your child will tap on what was taught in Primary 3 and go in-depth into the problem-solving skills. Your child will be exposed to more challenging questions that require heuristic skills.

• Multiplication and division
• Fractions
• Angles
• Geometrical figures
• Line symmetry
• Decimals
• 4 Operations of decimals
• Area & Perimeter
• Tables and graphs
• Time

Learning Outcomes: 

Children will be exposed to different problem-solving approaches and answering techniques, catering to their learning style. These methods incorporate strategies taught in school as well as those learned independently. Rather than solely memorising keywords or strategies found in assessment books, students will apply their acquired skills in practical settings, utilising heuristics, concepts, and problem-solving strategies.

• Model-drawing skills
• Formulating equations
• Understand the importance of applying the part-whole concept in Fractions
• Guiding them to use the protractor to measure angles and illustration

Teaching Methods:

Here at Instic, we use thinkingMath resources which have popularised solving problem sums using concepts or strategies such as Constant Difference, Internal Transfer, Quantity x Value, Total Change, Gap & Difference, etc. We also provide reinforcement through timed tests, activities, and workshops, coupled with ample practice opportunities. This comprehensive approach helps build your child's confidence in mastering new abilities and applying what they have learned.

Prerequisites:

Students are expected to have a foundational understanding of Primary school math concepts based on the previous year's topics.
