Course Overview

No doubt Primary 6 is commonly known as the toughest year in your child’s primary school life serving as a pivotal time to address any learning gaps in preparation for PSLE. At Instic Academy, however, we prioritise a well-paced learning approach. Our first step is ensuring foundational understanding from the lower primary levels is solidified. Only then do we shift focus to honing the essential skills required to tackle word problems effectively. Our mission is to instil confidence in our students, pushing them to tackle demanding questions. Through meticulous practice, they learn to mitigate careless mistakes by thoroughly reviewing each step and minimising calculation errors, ensuring they achieve accuracy during examinations.

Course Content

With the variety of methods introduced from Primary 1 through Primary 5, does your child feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what methods to use, when, and how? Before we dive into PSLE preparations, our dedicated coaches at Instic Academy take a step back to review and reinforce prior learnings. We then usher in new topics, including Algebra, Speed, Circles, and Pie Charts. While many programs emphasise bolstering problem-solving skills, we at Instic Academy take a strategic approach, guiding your child on the most effective strategies to employ during their revision. Our comprehensive support ensures that your child excels not only in tackling problem sums but also in acing both Paper 1 and 2 of the PSLE. For students seeking additional individual practice, consultation slots are readily available.

Learning Outcomes: 

Children will be exposed to different problem-solving approaches and answering techniques, catering to their individual learning styles. These methods incorporate strategies taught in school as well as those learned independently. Rather than solely memorising keywords or strategies found in assessment books, students will apply their acquired skills in practical settings, utilising heuristics, concepts, and problem-solving strategies.

• Active recall of older topics
• Formulating equations
• Understand the importance of applying the part-whole concept in Fractions
• Guiding them to use the protractor to measure angles and illustration
• Revising topics such as percentage, ratio and fractions.
• Understanding area of triangles, average and volume.
• Visualise angles, quadrilaterals and volume questions.

Teaching Methods:

Here at Instic, we use thinkingMath resources which has popularised solving problem sums using concepts or strategies such as Constant Difference, Internal Transfer, Quantity x Value, Total Change, Gap & Difference, etc. We also provide reinforcement through timed tests, activities, and workshops, coupled with ample practice opportunities. This comprehensive approach helps build your child's confidence in mastering new abilities and applying what they have learned.

While these strategies are an important part of the problem-solving process, at Instic we have raised the bar to the Next Generation of Learning with our proprietary ICAN approach to problem-solving.

Prerequisites:

Students are expected to have a foundational understanding of Primary school math concepts based on the previous year's topics.
