Homework

Hardest subject first, while they're still fresh

It's seven o'clock. The bag hasn't been opened and the spelling list is still inside it. You already know how the next hour goes.

Student Care at Agora is built so the homework happens in the afternoon, before you collect. A child who needs somebody standing over them to start will stop when that person walks away. So we teach children how to start on their own. Our teachers keep the afternoon on track, then leave the work itself to your child.

Cue, action, reward

C

Cue

The same room, the same point in the afternoon and the Agora Journal open on the table.

A

Action

Your child splits the work into small tasks and puts the hardest subject at the top.

R

Reward

Small rewards that are never bought: a word from the teacher, ten minutes with a friend, a finished list. No prize box, no sticker chart.

Term by term, the teacher needs to step in less.

When your child gets stuck

When your child gets stuck, a teacher clarifies the instruction and helps them work through it. We check the homework is done and nothing is skipped. We don't give the answers.

The same hour covers spelling practice and revision for school tests. Children also learn to organise their homework and belongings, check their work and keep going when it's hard.

Stuck on question 4? A teacher helps your child work out what “the rest” means. The answer stays your child's own.

Timetable

A typical Student Care timetable

By the time you collect in the evening, your child has eaten a hot meal, been outside and worked through the homework, hardest subject first. These are typical times. They may shift with school dismissal times and transport routes.

Each weekday

What each weekday is for

Every afternoon has a curriculum block after snack. Its focus changes through the week.

Monday

Character

Talking through choices, empathy and respect, with group discussions, role-play and values games.

Tuesday

Future Skills

Speaking up, solving problems and practical life skills. Modules include Growth Mindset, Financial Literacy, Public Speaking and Emotional Wellbeing.

Wednesday

Thematic learning

A weekly theme they research, discuss and connect across subjects.

Thursday and Friday

Team Quest

Group projects they plan, build and present to the room.

After the first Future Skills module our teachers told us the worksheets felt too much like school. We rebuilt them with less writing, more talking and an activity in every lesson.

FAQs

Questions parents ask about after-school care

Which schools do you pick up from?

We arrange transport from nine primary schools: Radin Mas Primary, CHIJ (Kellock), River Valley Primary, Cantonment Primary, Blangah Rise Primary, Alexandra Primary, Zhangde Primary, Queenstown Primary and Qifa Primary. Tell us your child's school and we'll confirm the route and the cost in writing. We add routes as families join.

Is transport included in the fee?

No. Transport is a separate, paid service, priced by school. Buses run from the schools further out, with walk-ups from the ones nearby. Our drivers are vetted and experienced. We mark each child onto the bus by name and mark them in again when they arrive.

How much does student care cost?

It varies a lot between centres, mostly because fees cover different things. Before you compare numbers, check what each fee includes: meals, the school holidays, how late the centre stays open and whether transport and classes cost extra. Agora has one monthly fee and no registration fee. Transport is priced by school. WhatsApp us your child's school and we'll send the current fee and transport cost in writing within 24 hours.

What does the monthly fee cover?

The monthly fee covers homework support every school day, a hot meal, outdoor play every day, project-based learning, Future Skills, holiday programmes during standard hours and care until 8pm. Transport, tuition, enrichment classes and the full-day holiday top-up are outside the fee. Ask us and we'll send the current fee and your school's transport cost in writing within 24 hours.

Is there a registration fee or a deposit?

There's no registration fee. Any deposit is set out in writing with the fees, before you commit.

Will the homework be finished before I collect my child?

That's what the afternoon is built for. Homework comes first, with the hardest subject at the top of the list. Your child works down the list from there. On the days something isn't finished, the handover note tells you what's left and why.

Will a teacher check the homework and fix the mistakes?

We check it's done and nothing is skipped. We help your child work through anything they're stuck on. We don't give the answers.

How will I know how my child is doing?

You hear how each afternoon went at pickup or by message. Updates on your child's day also come through the Agora Parents App. Four times a year we share an Individual Learning Plan on your child's progress in learning, character and wellbeing.

What happens with Chinese and tīngxiě?

Chinese is one of the daily practice subjects, on self-correcting worksheets aligned to the MOE curriculum. Qualified teachers also practise tīngxiě, Chinese spelling dictation, with each child twice a week.

How late can I collect my child?

We're open until 8pm, every weekday. If you expect to be late, WhatsApp or call us as soon as you can.

What happens in the school holidays?

We open for full days in the school holidays from 8.30am. A typical day includes breakfast, games, creative activities, a curriculum block, homework, rest, outdoor play and quiet reading until pickup. Full holiday days carry a separate daily top-up, given in writing before the holiday. Excursions are priced separately.

What does my child eat and can you handle allergies?

Children eat a hot meal together after school and have a snack later in the afternoon. Meals come from a central kitchen and are halal-certified. Tell us about any allergy or intolerance and we'll adjust your child's meals.

What does a typical day in Student Care look like?

Children arrive from about 1.45pm for lunch, then do homework and spelling from about 2.30pm. Snack is at 3.30pm, the curriculum block at 4pm and outdoor play at 4.45pm. From 6pm it's quiet reading in the library until pickup. We're open until 8pm. These are typical times.

Are all the ages mixed together?

Not for homework. Children split into age groups for the homework block.
