Design The City Skyline

Explore the world's famous skylines, then design a new landmark and light it up.

Overview

What makes a building iconic? Is it the height, the shape, or the way it changes the city around it?

Your child looks at some of the world's best-known skylines. They study landmarks like Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, the Burj Khalifa and the Empire State Building, and find out why each one is so easy to recognise.

Then they build a layered city skyline of their own. Once it takes shape, they spot a gap where a new landmark could belong. They design an original skyscraper to fill it.

To finish, they add linework and light across the layers. Their skyscraper slots into the gap, and the whole cityscape glows.

Who it's for

Children aged 7 to 12 who enjoy drawing, building or looking at cities. No design experience needed. Children are grouped by age: 7 to 9, and 10 to 12.

Class format

• 1-day holiday camp, 9.30am to 3pm.
• Hands-on studio session, from observation and sketching to a finished light-up model.
• Led by a team of educators, architects and designers.

What will be covered

- Famous skylines around the world, including Singapore's

- What makes a landmark easy to recognise: silhouette, scale, form, proportion and negative space

- Composing a layered skyline from real landmarks

- Spotting a visual gap in the cityscape

- Sketching an original skyscraper to fill that gap

- Adding architectural linework and light

- Putting it all together into a multi-layered, illuminated cityscape

Course fee

$165 for the 1-day camp. Includes snacks, lunch and all model-making materials.
