Math of Chess Camp: The Math Behind The Moves

Overview

Math of Chess Camp: Calculate for Victory! Introduces young minds to the fascinating world of chess calculations through storytelling. By weaving math concepts into captivating tales, participants will learn how to strategize and plan their moves, turning numbers and logic into a fun and memorable chess experience.  

Course Content

During this camp, participants will embark on three thrilling "Math Missions" where they will:  

1. Uncover the secrets of piece value and exchanges through exciting storylines.  
2. Solve tactical puzzles as part of heroic adventures.  
3. Learn to predict their opponents' moves by following narrative-driven scenarios.  

Learning Outcomes

• Learn relative piece valuation and incorporate it into decision-making
• Evaluate how to make good trades on the chessboard!
• Practice movement efficiency, and learn the unique strengths and strategies of each chess piece!

Teaching Methods 

Through immersive storytelling, participants will step into the roles of chess heroes navigating challenges and puzzles. The narrative approach ensures that concepts like tactical calculation and positional evaluation are learned in a creative, risk-free environment, making each lesson exciting and engaging.  

Prerequisites

Ages 6 to 12

Participants who are familiar with checkmate, castling and basic strategy

Assessment Methods

No formal assessments. Learning will be reinforced through story-based challenges and group activities.  

End of camp highlight: Chess Mini Tournament!

Required Materials

• Water bottle  
• Notebook and pen/pencil  
• Chessboard (optional, provided if unavailable)  

Important Notes

The camp runs for 180 minutes per session. Parents are kindly requested to ensure their children arrive on time, as no time extensions will be granted for late arrivals.
